On March 9, 2020, he was appointed Deputy Minister of Finance by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for his Cabinet. Shahar also held the position with Abd Rahim Bakri.


Shahar contested seat in Paya Besar in 2018 Malaysian general election, defeating candidates from Pakatan Harapan and PAS.
